What is the role of a Diabetes Educator?
While you consult your diabetes management with one of our specialists, diabetes educators/nurse practitioner can empower you to manage your diabetes before your next appointment. They teach, coach and guide patients so they understand their diabetes and how it affects their personal lives, and work with them to set (and meet) behaviour change goals to improve their health. An ADEA (Australian Diabetes Educators Association) CDE (Credentialed Diabetes Educator) provide assured assistance and quality education to those with, or at risk of, diabetes, as well as family members and carers.
An ADEA CDE typically receive special training in:
Biology
Social sciences
Communication
Counseling
Education
As a CDE, they can provide:
Support and assistance for those with diabetes
Education and training, including diabetes management practical skills, sick day management, management of hypo & hyperglycaemia, exercise management and self-care skills
Clinical care and management, including ongoing insulin adjustment
Information, knowledge skills and strategies
Assistance with setting self-management goals
Education on diabetes related technologies including insulin pumps and CGM/FGM
